Sustainable Wellness is In
We live in a world that loves quick fixes. Everywhere you look, there’s a new “30-day challenge,” “detox plan,” or “magic diet” that promises dramatic results in record time. We see them on social media, and they’ve become popular in the work place. But…

Newsflash: those methods don’t create lasting change.
Intentions are good when it comes to workplace fitness and wellness challenges, but they never really achieve the goal– assuming your goal is to help your employees live happier and healthier lives with the added benefit of increasing productivity and employee retention by improving work/life balance and company culture. Right?
At I’mperfect Life Coaching, we say: “Challenge culture is out. Sustainable wellness is in.”
Because the truth is, your employees don’t need another extreme diet or exhausting fitness challenge—they need healthy habits that stick for life.
Why Employee Wellness Challenges Don’t Work
- Employee wellness challenges don’t create habits- they are a game for people to win.
- Employee wellness challenges promote the idea that living a healthy lifestyle is about pass or fail and can cause added stress rather than improved physical and mental health.
- Employee wellness challenges leave people feeling defeated when they don’t accomplish the goal, perpetuating the feeling of failure.
- Employee wellness challenges have a deadline, real-life health and wellness is meant to last a lifetime.
- Employee wellness challenges aren’t typically tailored to individual needs and unintentionally exclude employees from being able to participate
I could keep going, but I won’t. However, I will say that wellness challenges, as part of a comprehensive wellness program, can be beneficial if they are done the right way. (Read More)
What Is Sustainable Wellness?
Sustainable wellness isn’t about perfection. It’s not about cutting out entire food groups, punishing your body, drinking copious amounts of water, starting over, or making drastic changes all at one time.
It’s a lifestyle built on small, repeatable behaviors that honor your mental and physical health.
- It’s adding veggies to your plate—not cutting out entire food groups.
- It’s choosing sleep over late-night doom-scrolling.
- It’s joyfully moving your body because you can, not because you “should.”
In other words: wellness should support your life, not control it.
It’s less about diet and exercise and more about creating a mindset that promotes health and happiness.
How to Adopt Sustainable Wellness
You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. In fact, small steps are far more effective than big, short-lived efforts. Here are three pillars to focus on:
1. Simplify
Start with one habit at a time. When you layer it onto something you already do, it sticks.
💡 Example: Drink a glass of water while you wait for your morning coffee.
2. Be Compassionate
Change doesn’t come from shame or guilt. It comes from self-compassion.
As research from UpCoach suggests, kindness fuels motivation in ways punishment never can.
3. Prioritize Consistency Over Intensity
A 15-minute walk every day will do more for your health than an occasional 60-minute HIIT class you dread.
💡 Think progress, not perfection.
Why Sustainable Wellness Matters
Wellness isn’t a challenge to conquer—it’s a relationship with oneself that needs to be nurtured.
When we let go of quick fixes and embrace sustainable practices, you not only improve your health—you also:
- Reduce stress
- Increase energy
- Improve focus and productivity
- Build confidence in your ability to maintain change
And most importantly: we create a lifestyle we don’t need a break from.
